Confidential APT: Designing Privacy Features on Aptos

TL;DR: Confidential APT is coming to Mainnet pending an upcoming software release and governance vote.

This brings confidentiality that supports real-world, compliant use-cases to the Aptos Global Trading Engine. Confidentiality features are tied to APT, bringing more demand based on this highly requested feature. It is entirely opt-in on Aptos.

"Key to a person's dignity is her ability to decide to whom she will reveal information about herself."

— -SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce, 2025

No financial network can operate without confidentiality:

  • For everyday users, confidentiality is protection. For instance, buying a coffee without letting every stranger on the internet reconstruct your net worth from the block explorer.

  • For institutions, confidentiality is often an operational requirement. Banks, treasury ops, or payroll cannot run on a fully public ledger.

Today, transacting onchain requires choosing between two options. You either live in a glass house where every transaction, balance, and counterparty relationship is permanently visible to the world. Or, you retreat into fully anonymous systems where identities are hidden entirely, making it impossible for regulated businesses to participate, cutting off mainstream liquidity.

Neither option is realistic long-term, and this lack of confidentiality is a core reason why trillions of dollars in institutional capital remain sidelined.

The vision is to have onchain Venmos coexist on Aptos alongside institutional settlement systems, all operating with the same native confidentiality guarantees. Every one of these capabilities is tied to APT. Demand for confidentiality features translates into demand for the native token, all powered by the Aptos infrastructure.

Confidential APT

Confidential APT is a protocol-level primitive shipping to Mainnet. It gives users the option to encrypt native token balances and transaction amounts, while keeping participant identities visible onchain.

It is entirely opt-in. Users who prefer full transparency can continue operating exactly as they do today.

  • Addresses stay visible. Sender and receiver are always identifiable onchain. There is a clear pathway to accountability and compliant use-cases.

  • Amounts are encrypted. How much you sent and how much you hold are encrypted and invisible to everyone.

  • Validity is always provable. Zero-knowledge proofs verify that every transaction is legitimate, guaranteeing no double-spending or inflation.

  • Selective disclosure is always an option. Users can optionally reveal balances and transaction details to trusted parties.

What This Means in Practice

Every transaction reveals something. Who you support. What you value. How you live.

In the physical world, this information is naturally contained. The person behind you in line cannot see your bank balance. Your employer doesn't know what you spent on dinner last night.

Onchain, that boundary often disappears. Every balance and interaction is readable by anyone with a block explorer.

Confidential APT puts the curtain back up by keeping your financial life between you and the people you choose to share it with.

Confidentiality as a Stack

Confidentiality in any financial system is multi-dimensional, and cannot be reduced to a single feature you toggle on or off.

Aptos will systematically address each layer in the stack:

  • Identity Layer: Keyless Accounts. Users authenticate through credentials like Google or Apple without linking that identity to their onchain address. Zero-knowledge proofs verify authorization without revealing the authorizer.

  • Account Layer: Confidential APT. Balances and transaction amounts can be encrypted at the protocol level. Validators verify validity through encryption without ever seeing the actual numbers.

  • Intent Layer: Encrypted Mempool. Transaction contents can stay sealed if opted in until block ordering is finalized, when all transaction details are recorded onchain. Validators can sequence, but they cannot read. This reduces the likelihood of front-running, sandwich attacks, and value leakage from toxic MEV.

All Roads Lead to APT

Confidential APT is a deliberate design decision to ensure the network can support serious financial use cases at scale.

The thesis: Confidentiality becomes the prerequisite for institutional adoption and user protection. APT is positioned as the access key to high-value onchain infrastructure on the global trading engine.

Demand for features like confidentiality translates into demand for APT.
